As the acclaimed ensemble cast of The Norman Conquests gets ready to go home to London (the Tony-winning revival must close on July 26), the actors made time for an afternoon get-together at classic Broadway boite Sardi’s on July 15. On the agenda: a spot of tea and cookies (what, no crumpets?!) and signing posters for future fund-raising use by Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

Photo Op:  The Ultimate Work Break: 9 to 5 Stars at Barnes & Noble

New York City workers who played hooky and ducked into the Lincoln Center Barnes & Noble on July 14 got a special treat: the stars of 9 to 5 singing and signing their original cast recording. In addition to their performances, 9 to 5ers Alison Janney, Stephanie J. Block, Megan Hilty and Marc Kudisch offered the enthusiastic crowd a break from office gossip and stale break room coffee with anecdotes about their show’s award-winning composer/lyricist Dolly Parton. The whole event was a huge pre-sale; the CD will be released in stores on the Dolly Parton label on July 28. (It’s already available at the Marquis Theatre, where 9 to 5 punches in eight times a week).

Jerry Springer May Join Cast of Broadway's Chicago

Talk-show host Jerry Springer, who recently played a limited run in the London cast of Kander and Ebb's Chicago, may join the Tony-winning revival of that acclaimed musical next month.

The New York Times reports that Springer is currently in talks to repeat his work as Billy Flynn for New York audiences at the Ambassador Theatre. A spokesperson for the production could not confirm the casting.

Springer also told the New York daily that he will play week-long runs in Chicago in Atlanta and Philadelphia. In fact, Philadelphia's Kimmel Center website is currently advertising his appearance, which is scheduled for Sept. 15-20 at the Academy of Music.

At a London press event, Springer previously said, "Who wouldn't want to be on Broadway, just like who wouldn't want to be on the West End? Let's see how comfortable I am doing this, but it's not beyond imagination that if this works well and I'm really enjoying it, to do a stint in this role. I understand why they asked me. 99.9 percent of the roles in theory you wouldn't even think of me – but with this role, I don't think it's a stretch for the public to suddenly see me doing that. Whether its the lawyer thing, the Chicago thing, the entertainment thing, it all kind of works – I 'get' Billy Flynn."

Tony Award winner Alan Cumming, who will star in Julie Taymor's Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark in winter 2010, will play the intimate Joe's Pub July 29.

Cumming will be part of Our Hit Parade: All Michael Jackson Edition, which stars Bridgett Everett, Kenny Mellman and Neal Medlyn with special guests Jenn Harris and Murray Hill. Show time is 9:30 PM.

"For the first and only time," press notes state, "Our Hit Parade is breaking from its format and presenting an All Michael Jackson Edition. . . The King of Pop touched us all and his songs will live on forever. So join Bridget Everett, Kenny Mellman and Neal Medlyn as they, and a slew of guest artists including Alan Cumming, Jenn Harris, Murray Hill, Claudia Gonson, Dudley Klute, NA+AN, and many more as they pay tribute to the songs of Michael Jackson. Don't be fooled: this is not your staid overly reverential tribute. Expect the insane!"

Johnny Depp's Dream Role is to Play Stage Legend Carol Channing

Johnny Depp, known for a wide range of eccentric movies from the Pirates of the Caribbean series to Sweeney Todd to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Edward Scissorhands, has his eye on a new film role. The three-time Oscar nominee wants to play Broadway legend Carol Channing in a biopic of her life, according to The New York Daily News.

At first glance, the hunky Hollywood leading man does not seem right for the part of octogenarian Channing, a three-time Tony winner best known for starring in Hello, Dolly!. But Depp insists he could do justice to the stage icon.

“My dream role would be to play musical legend Carol Channing," the actor said. "I love her, I really do. She's amazing." How would he manage to morph into the platinum blonde icon? "With all the digital technology available these days,” Depp explained, “I could probably pull it off!"

The entire cast of the original Chicago production of Steppenwolf Theatre Company's Superior Donuts will reprise their roles when the play by Tracy Letts makes its Broadway debut this fall, the producers announced July 16.

Only Michael McKean, of the 2008 production, had been previously announced for the Broadway bow at the Music Box Theatre. Previews begin Sept. 16 toward an Oct. 1 opening.

The cast includes Steppenwolf ensemble members Jon Michael Hill, Yasen Peyankov and James Vincent Meredith with Jane Alderman, Kate Buddeke, Cliff Chamberlain, Michael Garvey, Robert Maffia, plus McKean.

Superior Donuts is written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning ensemble member Tracy Letts and directed by ensemble member Tina Landau. The play enjoyed a sold-out, world-premiere run at Steppenwolf Theatre Company in summer 2008. The Music Box was the recent home to Letts' Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning August: Osage County.

In the play, "Arthur Przybyszewski owns a decrepit donut shop in the Uptown neighborhood of Chicago. Franco Wicks, a black teenager who is his only employee, wants to change the shop for the better. This provocative comedy, set in the heart of one of Chicago's most diverse communities, explores the challenges of embracing the past and the redemptive power of friendship."
